Description

Forged in 1870 by the respected smith Noatoshi Saku, this tanto represents the final chapter of a legacy. Created during the abolition of the samurai class, it was the last piece he registered with the government before swords were outlawed. Triple-papered—NBTHK certification for the blade, a rare tang rubbing from the 1940s, and certification for the koshirae—this tanto is both a historical artifact and a stunning piece of craftsmanship. The fittings are extraordinary: an intricately ribbed saya, a delicately wound silk ito revealing fine manuki, and a bird-cage motif. Even the kuragata is engraved in gold—an unheard-of flourish. Rarely does such quality and provenance come at such an accessible price. Includes custom display stand.

The Story

This tanto is not just a sword—it’s the closing act of an era. Forged in 1870 during the samurai abolition, Noatoshi Saku poured his mastery into what would be his final work for a warrior. After this, his life’s calling turned to more mundane tools—no longer weapons for samurai. When this piece arrived, it surprised even the seller. Triple papered, with NBTHK certification, a rare postwar tang rubbing, and koshirae papers, it’s a collector’s dream. The lacquered saya, fine silk wrapping, rare bird-cage motif, gold-engraved kuragata, and complete kozuka all confirm: this was a final masterpiece. Offered at the lowest price of any blade in the collection, it remains a rare chance to own a true 'last' in history—the Last of the Samurai.
