Description

Forged in 1331, in the early Muromachi period, this exceptional tanto is more than a weapon—it is a love letter, a political alliance, and a legacy preserved in steel and lacquer. Crafted as a wedding gift from a daimyo to his daughter during the War of the Clans, this piece symbolizes the union of power and nobility: a marriage between the wealthy Butterfly clan and the imperially-linked Rose family. The blade, certified by the NBTHK, remains in remarkable condition despite nearly 700 years of age. Polished many times over the centuries, it shows softening of some finer details, but no rust or flaw, grounding it in the reality of its long life while preserving its elegance. To honor the significance of this extraordinary piece, a custom hardwood display stand is included at no additional charge, complete with a brass-inscribed plaque commemorating “The Butterfly and The Rose”.

The Story

During Japan’s 14th-century War of the Clans, five samurai families vied for power. In a strategic marriage, a wealthy daimyo sought to solidify a bond with a family connected to the imperial line. His daughter, symbolized by the chrysanthemum crest (rose), married into the butterfly mon clan.To honor this union, her father presented her with this ceremonial tanto—a blend of protection, prestige, and paternal love. With this gift came a warning: “She is armed and dangerous. Treat her with honor.”
